MY VISION ON LEADERSHIP
Leadership is defined as “a collective and collaborative
process focused on relationships and networks” (Kezar et al, 2011, p.63) and it
has crucial impact upon the achievement of organizational aims and objectives.
Traditionally, leadership has been divided into autocratic, democratic and
laisser-faire categories as it has been argued by leadership theorist Kurt Lewin.
However, Fitzsimons et al (2011) convincingly argue that the
range of leadership styles and theoretical frameworks are much wider and more
complex and not all of them fit within the classification offered by Lewin.
Specifically, additional leadership frameworks include bureaucratic leadership,
charismatic leadership, people-oriented leadership, servant leadership,
task-oriented leadership, transactional leadership, as well as,
transformational leadership.
The things I want more than anything growing up as a leader
is to be unforgettable to employee to impact on their performance growth
happiness and life .I had the experience of working under many leaders and I
learnt different style of leaderships. Among those leadership style I would
like to practice transformational leadership style
Transformational
Leadership
As per Mullins and Christy (2016), Transformational
leadership is the process creating motivation and commitment amongst followers
in achieving organizations vision and the leader’s ability to harness values
and morals of followers by creating an environment of trust and loyalty
(Mullins and Christy, 2016). I believe such a leadership style would be
motivational as it gives authority to the followers to make decisions on tasks
pertaining their task at hand with confidence.
Leadership
style at Virgin
Leadership style at Virgin Atlantic stems from the organizational
culture of the company that has been set by its founder Sir Richard Branson,
who successfully exercises charismatic and transformational leadership styles.
It has been specified that “his leadership style is often described as
‘transformational’, because of his informal style and lack of emphasis on
hierarchy within his companies, and ‘charismatic’ because Branson and
Virgin are so inextricably linked” (Grout and Fisher, 2011, p.46).
Moreover, Sir Richard Branson positions his adventurer
personality as the brand image for all companies belonging to Virgin Group,
including Virgin Atlantic. Therefore, due to the tremendous influence of
Richard Branson as well as his encouragement transformational leadership style
exercised in various management levels within Virgin Atlantic.
Effective exercise of transformational leadership style has
enabled Virgin Atlantic to increase its market share though introducing
innovations in various business
Conclusion
There is no ‘right’
or ‘wrong’ leadership style and the impact of exercising any leadership style
depends on a range of factors including the nature of the business, personality
of employee, team dynamics within the organization, external market environment
etc.
My objective is to developed my knowledge further in
understanding different types of leadership styles practiced all over the
world. The styles of leadership keep changing as we advance hence the success
stories about much-needed organizational reforms. Thereby in order to become a
great Transformational leader, I would like to allocate time to develop the
skills that I lack and polish up on my strong skills.
